Chuck Olson Retiring
Chuck Olson, after nearly 60 years as a Barbershopper will be retiring from this great hobby after our Balladtown Cabaret show on Saturday September 24th. His quartet, The Tualatones will also be performing for the last time. Chuck has been mentor, hero, funny entertainer, great director, coach, and just a really good person. He founded the Tualatin Valley Harmony Masters in 1974. He was the baritone in the award-winning quartet The Aliens along with Jim, Bob and Jay. If you are a Barbershopper, or if you have ever seen Chuck do his thing then you know what I’m talking about. Chuck lives and breathes barbershop. If you’ve ever been on stage with Chuck directing the finale at Balladtown then you know his love for it. He never has a dry eye after directing. And he always says, “God bless you. I love you!” And thank you Bev for letting us have him for so many great years. Please come to our show and show them your love. Tickets at tualatinvalley.com |

A Little Freestyle Barbershopping
Man, it was hot on Tuesday evening! Too hot to rehearse in our regular upstairs location. So, Ed hung a note on the door and we met a couple of blocks down the street at The King's Head pub. We took up a few tables in a long room (hallway really) and asked if we could sing. We worked our way through the songs planned for our rehearsal and a few Polecats, and the regular visitors to the pub loved it. We might have had our first "groupies!" We had a great time rehearsing and performing all at once and took several requests and serenaded a few ladies. Turns out, this night was also National Night Out, so Forest Grove was abuzz with people as we departed the pub. We ended up singing Happy Birthday to a lovely young lady (requested by her husband), and sang Let Me Call You Sweetheart just to make her day special! Her husband shared that her elderly mother is ill and unable to sing, so he'll be sending the video to her and said she would be so pleased. Great outreach gentlemen! Please join us for rehearsals each Tuesday evening. You never know what might happen! |
Barbershop in the Grove 2017
On July 15, area barbershoppers and their families gathered for singing, barbequing, and all-around fun! See the photo album here. Rogers Park in Forest Grove provided a great venue on a warm day! Perfect for hotdogs and shenanigans. Paul Olguin's quartet 'Hometown Harmony' was there along with around eight guys from Bridgetown Sound chorus. We had gals from two Sweet Adeline choruses as well, including the Columbia River Sweet Adeline chorus from Vancouver, Washington. We also had a handfull of our past members come out: Bob Dodge, Keith Upton, Miles Dean, Roy Barnhart, David Moe, and a long-time TVHM'r Doc. Local Harmony Masters quartets performed, including The Tualatones and Penny Arcade. As a group we sang a few tags, we hosted an impromptu quartet contest, and sang a few Polecats as a large ensemble. It was a great time of singing and fellowshipping. This was the first annual Barbershop in the Grove event, so plan to attend next year! |

Looking for a New Rehearsal Venue
This past weekend we had our 2017 planning meeting and one of the topics we discussed was a new rehearsal venue. The Elk's lodge has worked for us for many years, but we are beginning to think about making a change. Dave Roher has proposed with a very spacious place for us to call "our place". Our own little "Clubhouse", located in downtown Forest Grove. While this new prospect is exciting, we need to be sure we have considered all reasonable possibilities. If you know of a location that might work for us, please send it to our President and Secretary (president@tualatinvalley.com, secretary@tualatinvalley.com) so that we can give it proper consideration. |

New Officers for 2017 Installed
At the Annual Installation Dinner, Mel Knight installed our new Officers for 2017. As part of the ceremony, Mel delivered a poem specially written for this event (see below).
Tualatin Valley Installation Poem by Mel Knight Ed Phillips is your President, his leadership we know, Please give Ed all your support, to help the Chapter grow. Ed’s a Lead, so lead he must, there’s lots of stuff to do So can he count on everyone, like you? And you? And you? Past President Doug Overbay is really quite a guy, His Tenor singing does resound a-way up in the sky. So lean on Doug for good advice, I know you can’t go wrong He’ll share his experience with you, then break into a song. If you want a good Secretary, Don Petersen knows his stuff. He’s also the Chapter Contact man, so don’t give him any guff. Two jobs are really no trouble for this techno savvy guy, Put your trust in Don you’ll see his skills are pretty high. David Allen Dobson II, his name is kind of long He was a Bass now he’s a Lead and he’ll try most any song. Chapter Development is his game and Secretary On-Line, He has two very big jobs, but we know he’ll do just fine. Taking care of all your money, Gary Gale the Treasurer be. And if some day you come up short, check his pockets just to see We really trust you Gary with all the Chapter’s dough You couldn’t pick a better guy, your money he won’t blow. David Osborn’s on the Board, it’s called “at Large” I guess He’s there to make darn sure the rest don’t make a mess. There are 3 David’s as Officers…gee that’s seems quite a lot, When I talked to this Dave he told me that he’s the one on top! All of Oregon needs to know of the Harmony Masters existence So Marketing is the answer through David Rohrer’s persistence. So Dave you need to tell the world, every Jim & Joe and Sally, About how great your Chapter is, not hiding in some alley. How do you keep the music going? With a Music VP that’s how. Butch Berquist is a good one, I’ll tell you that right now. He also assists in arm-waving chores, sings a bit of Baritone too, Without Butch around here, you’d really be in the stew. (I should let you know right here that there’s not a whole lot that rhymes with Berquist!) Now we all know Chuck Olson, what would you without him. He’s a special friend of mine, I’m really here to tout him. He’s waved his arms and fixed your vowels, created funny stuff, Chucks been around so many years we never get enough. So here’s to Cavemen, School Houses, Doctors, even Chickens And all Chuck’s dedication to the Barbershop tradition! I notice most of the new Officers, were old Officers as well I hope that leading TVHM is not a job from Hell! | |||

TVHM Float in the Forest Grove Holiday Light Parade
The Tualatin Valley Harmony Masters entered a float in the 2016 Forest Grove Holiday Light Parade. It had been many years since our last entry and we decided that would be a fun event that would allow us to sing for people in the Forest Grove area and hopefully encourage some men to come sing with us. We recorded 2 songs and played them through a speaker system while the members on the float sang the songs. Several members walked along the parade route to talk to people and distribute flyers. |

Long time member Dave Muralt passed away 6/19/2016
Yesterday, on Father's Day, one of the most amazingly loving and kind fathers, wonderful husband, big-hearted man, beekeeper, fisherman, true friend, role model, servant of Jesus, and much more, Dave Paul Muralt left this world for a far better place. Our hearts are greatly saddened beyond what words can describe. We find peace in knowing that he is with Jesus. Dave joined the Tualatin Valley chapter in 1993 and had a total of 25 years as a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS). In addition to singing with the Harmony Masters chorus, Dave sang with the Tualatones Quartet. Over the years, he was responsible for bringing 31 new members into the BHS. On June 15th it was announced that Dave had been awarded Barbershopper of the Month for May. You can read the announcement here. Comments after his passing included: Our buddy Dave Muralt has passed into Heaven and is hanging out with God.
After a long battle with cancer he won. No more sickness. Please join me in praying for his wife Terri and family. Couldn't have happened to a better man.....he is with Dale Crouch and others who have gone before!! The heavenly choir just got a great bass and a wonderful friend!! God bless you all!! Heaven just got a wonderful Bass. He will be missed dearly. God Bless |

Advanced Vocals: Barbershop Harmony Class
Gregory Bryan just completed the Advanced Vocals: Barbershop Harmony class at Journey Theater Arts Group. Last night (June 9) was the "Showcase" for the spring classes. Below are several photos of the students performing and 2 pages from the Program. The class was taught by Marsha Kelly with Chris Gable serving as Teaching Assistant. The students did a great job and received a huge ovation at the conclusion of their performance. There may be some prospects here for the TVHM and Pride of Portland choruses. Maybe they will offer the class again next year. |

Road Clean Up Day
Today 8 of us picked up trash along the 1.2 miles of Cornelius Pass Road between Baseline and TV Highway. In early 2013 TVHM adopted this stretch of Cornelius Pass Road as a community service project. Today we met at 9 am and were done by 11 am. We split into two teams, one starting at each end and proceeded toward each other from opposite ends until we ran into the other team, then crossed the road and walked back. If you weren't there you missed a beautiful day and some good fellowship. Maybe you will be able to join us in the Fall. |
Fire Severely Damages Rental Home Owned by Our Director, Chuck Olson
Chuck was awakened early Tuesday morning with the news that there was a severe fire at a rental home he and Bev own in Cornelius. According to the KOIN6 News report, no one was injured but there was at least $25,000 in damage to the house, a neighboring house, and a car. Despite being up half the night, and spending the day dealing with insurance adjustors and other issues related to the fire, Chuck was a rehearsal at 7pm Tuesday night ready to Direct the Chorus. |

Barbershop Singer Artwork
Gregory Bryan is one of our High School members. Gregory took a one evening introductory welding class that included the opportunity to try welding some scrap pieces together. Gregory looked at the scrap he had to choose from and came up with a Barbershop singer. The first picture is Gregory and Don Petersen (Gregory's grandfather) showing off Gregory's artwork. The 2nd picture is a closeup of the artwork. Do you think Gregory likes Barbershop? The 2nd picture is now the profile picture for the TVHM Facebook page. |
